NBA AT THE BREAK

Now that the NBA All-Star game is upon us, let’s take a quick break and check out how certain teams have performed at this juncture of the season. This year’s list of moneymakers and moneybreakers includes a few surprises.

For openers, these are the teams – in alphabetical order - that own winning records (SU – Straight-Up) away from home:
EASTERN CONFERENCE – Detroit (19-7)
WESTERN CONFERNECE – Dallas (19-7), LA Clippers (13-12), Phoenix (15-9) and San Antonio (19-9)

Here are the teams that owns losing records (SU) at home:
EASTERN CONFERENCE – Atlanta (11-14) , Charlotte (10-18), Chicago (10-14), New York (11-15) and Toronto (10-16)
WESTERN CONFERFENCE – Houston (8-16), Portland (12-13) and Seattle (12-14)

Here are the best teams in division games (SU):

Amazingly, Houston is winless (0-9) SU in division games. However, with the return of All-Stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady to the lineup, look for the Rockets to reverse most of their negative numbers during the second half of the season.

Week 6 Football Review

It was was a weekend of wild finishes on the College Football scene last week
as no less than a handful of games were decided within the final 30 seconds
of play.  It will be interesting to see how the photo-finish winners (USC,
Michigan, Wisconsin, Boston College (next week), and UCLA fare in their next game.
Likewise, let's see what happens to the losers of those games, namely Notre
Dame, Penn State, Minnesota (next week) Washington State perform...

Straight-up winners who lost the game ITS (In The Stats) last week included:
Arkansas State, East Carolina, Iowa, Marshall, Memphis, Michigan, Missouri,
North Texas, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, Southern Miss, Stanford,

City...

Two underdogs that have over 100 yards the better defense will be in action

well...

Week 5 Football Review

Week Five provided quite a week of surprises and noteworthy achievements, especially in College Football. For instance -

Texas head coach Mack Brown was able to exorcise a few demons when his Longhorns overwhelmed Oklahoma , 45-12, to snap a five game series losing skein and improve his career mark to 52-47-1 SU & 43-54-2 ATS in games against .600 > opposition.... Joe Paterno continued to prove his critics wrong with another upset win over a ranked team as his Nittany Lions improved to 6-0 on the season with a 17-10 win over Ohio State... Minnesota won the Brown Jug for the first time in 16 years with a 23-20 upset victory over once mighty Michigan... UCLA also remained unbeaten with dramatic come from behind win over California... Georgia head coach Mark Richt became the first coach to ever defeat Phil Fulmer three times in a row in Knoxville with a 27-14 victory over the Vols... Southern Cal continued its amazing attack when they piled 724 yards on Arizona in a lethargic 42-21 win over the Wildcats...

Last week's 'Inside-Out' Stat teams (teams who won the game but lost the total yards) in College Football included - Baylor, Colorado State, Kansas State, NC State, Penn State, SMU, TCU, UCLA and Utah State...

There were no less than 11 college football teams that managed to pull off upset wins as touchdown dogs or more. They included Ball State, Baylor, BYU, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oregon, SMU, Stanford, TCU, Tulsa and UNLV....

The following college football teams have held every opponent to a season low - or 2nd low - yardage mark in all games this season: Alabama, Boston College, Colorado, Kansas State, Michigan, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia Tech. On the flip side, Ohio University and Rice have allowed season high - or 2nd high - yardage marks in every game this year. Both Michigan State and Southern Cal have gained season high yards against every foe they've faced this season...

Most bizarre stat team is definitely UCLA. The Bruins are 5-0 on the year despite having been outgained in four different games... On the opposite end of the ladder, Arkansas State and Northern Illinois are each 2-3 on the season, yet have outgained four of their five opponents...

On the NFL ledger, the Chicago Bears have managed to hold all four opponents to season low - or 2nd low - yards this year, while Jacksonville and Tampa Bay have surrendered season low - or 2nd low - yards in all but one game this campaign. On the reverse side, San Francisco has allowed season high - or 2nd high - yards in every game this year, while the Giants and Rams have coughed up season high - or 2nd high - yards in all but one game each this season...

Arizona is the NFL's most puzzling stat team, as the Cardinals are 1-4 on the year despite having outgained 4 of their five opponents... Conversely, the New York Giants are 3-1 despite having been outstatted in all four contests...

Once again our Late Phone Service cranked out another winning week, going 4-2 for the season we now stand 13-8 in College Football and 9-6 in the NFL...

Question of the Week: what on earth has happened to North Texas and Rice? The Mean Green returned the top two running backs in the land the last two years in Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas, yet saw their 25-game conference win streak snapped with a loss to lowly Troy as they are now 1-3 on the season. After opening the 2004 season at 2-0, the Rice Owls have now dropped 12 of their last 13 contests, allowing more than 48 PPG in the losses...

Week 4 Football Review

After the first month of the 2005 football season, things are beginning to take shape as certain teams begin to pull away from the pack.  In the NFL it's looking more and more like the Colts and the Eagles are emerging as the class of their conferences, while in College Football Southern Cal and Texas appear headed toward a showdown in this year's Rose Bowl.  But alas, there always seems to be a hurdle in the road when it comes to the Longhorns.  For them to arrive in Pasadena this year they will have to do something no other Mack Brown football team has ever done - namely win a conference title.  Having to do so in the Big 12, with a championship game awaiting, might find them on the outside looking in at season's end...

Tell me the last time you saw a College Football teams AVERAGE more than 6oo YPG and 50 PPG.  The Trojans of USC are looking more and more like Oscar Robertson in his glory days in the NBA when he dominated everyone, AVERAGING a Triple-Double in the same season...

In College Football, Michgan, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas have all each held their foes to season low yardage marks in every game they've played, while Michigan State and Southern Cal have each gained season high  yards in every game they've played...

Weirdest stat team thus far in '05?  How about Marshall.  The Thundering Herd is 2-2 on the year, yet has won the stats in every game.  They're looking more and more like NC State of the past two seasons (6-8 SU but 13-1 ITS)...

Speaking of weird, what ever happened to North Texas?  A team that had won 25 consecutive conference games in row, heading into this season, featured the return of the nation's leading running backs from each of the previous two seasons (Jamario Thomas and Patrick Cobbs), and yet they are getting buried with each passing week...

Once again our Late Phone Service eked out another winning week, thanks to Green Bay's dramatic Monday Night backdoor cover, going 4-3 for the 2nd straight week.  For the season we stand 11-7 in College Football and 7-5 in the NFL...

It's been clarified - the ugly helmets worn by the Wisconsin Badgers were a one-game only deal.  It was a throwback helmet dating back to the 1960's.  We say throw them away - for good...

Question of the Week:  Can Phil Fulmer shake his rap as a big time choke artist this week?  His teams are 1-14 ATS at home against .667 or better opposition this millennium...

Week 3 Football Review

Who would have believed it - at the conclusion of Week Three of the 2005
season the NFL division leaders include with Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami, Tampa Bay
and Washington.  Meanwhile division cellar dwellars took on the names of
Baltimore, Green Bay and the NY Jets...

After three weeks of play, both Chicago and Jacksonville have held all of
their opponents to season low yardage marks, while the lowly 49ers have
surrendered season high yards to all three foes...

Looking 'Inside The Stats' (ITS) College Football, Alabama, Michigan, NC
State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Texas have all each held foes to
season low yards, while Bowling Green, Navy, San Jose State and Texas A&M have
allow allowed benchmark high yardage in games played through the month of
September...

Something's gotta give: Minnesota is 4-0 SU & ATS & ITS, having rushed the
ball for more than 300 yards in all four contests.  On the flip side while
Wisconsin has sprung out of the gate at 4-0 SU & ATS they are only 1-3 ITS...

Pity poor Memphis.  They lose their starting QB in Game One and then their
backup goes down last week.  The Tigers will now be operating Billy Barefield, a
175 lb. true freshman.  At least they have the services of star RB DeAngleo
Williams...

On what was perceived by many to be the toughest week of the season, our Late
Phone Football Service scraped out a 4-3 effort last week.  We only only hope
that serves as a sign of good things to come down the road...

Question of the Week:  Are the USC Trojans the best team in the modern era of
College Football?  Don't laugh, they're making a strong case.

Week 2 Football Review

What a wild weekend it was on the gridiron this past week.  I don't remember ever seeing FOUR college temas gaining more than 700 yards on the same Saturday (Arizona State, Southern Cal, Texas A&M and Texas Tech).  It goes to show the scheduling of non-conference games, with the BCS committee looking on is getting out of hand...

And how about the NFL, with no less than FOUR games being decided by 20 or more points!  Is there a NFL/BCS poll we aren't aware of?...

Who would have believed that after three weeks of the 2005 college football season that Baylor and Vanderbilt would be 3-0 while the Pitt Panthers would be 0-3!...

The 'Queer Stat for Inquiring Minds' had to be the stat sheet at the half in the Boston College/Florida State game.  Somehow, heading into the locker room the Eagles had 13:12 time of possession (to Florida State’s 1:48), had out gained the Seminoles, 151-38 yards and had a near six-to-one advantage in total plays (35-6), yet were behind on the scoreboard, 14-10...

Another stat to ponder was Southern Cal's first quarter against Arkansas.  The Trojans had 1:32 time of possession, yet lead 28-7 at the end of the quarter.  USC ran only eight plays yet scored four touchdowns.  A victory by Southern Cal this Saturday at Oregon would tie a Trojans' school and PAC 10 record for most consecutive wins (25)...

Looking 'Inside The Stats' at last week's stat sheets there were no less than 14 college teams that won the game yet were outgained in the game.  The largest differential margins - 100 yards or more -  for these 'inside-out' stat winners were Boston College 380-256 and Notre Dame 595-488...

'Inside the Stats' on Sunday's NFL card saw four teams (Arizona, Jacksonville, Green Bay and New England) lose the game but win the stats. ..

The Mnnesota Vikings are off a 0-2 start thanks to 12 turnovers, resulting in a minus-nine net differential.  Likewise, Baltimore is 0-2 after losing turnovers 6-1. On the flip side Pittsburgh is 2-0 thanks to a 0-5 edge in giveaway/takeaways...

It was a nice weekend for our Preferred Picks Late Phone Service clients as we swept the board in college football Saturday, going 4-0, to cap off a sweet 6-1 effort for the week...
