WEEK NINE FOOTBALL REVIEW...

LAST WEEK'S COLLEGE & NFL GAMES - INSIDE THE STATS...

This year’s PERFECT STORM game between the Colts and Patriots will take up most of the airwaves and print media available, but the fact of the matter is there are a lot more games on this week’s card that look a lot more attractive to this handicapper.

Looking inside the stats at last week’s college games there were a total of 12 teams that won ‘inside-out’ In The Stats (won the game but lost the yardage).  Those who one the game but lost by 100 or more yards are designated with an (*) asterisk. These ITS teams included: Buffalo, *Colorado, Connecticut, Florida Atlantic, *Iowa, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri, Oregon, *Tennessee, Wake Forest and Washington.

Navy is the only team to have gained 200 or more rushing yards in every game to date.

From the PLAYBOOK MIDWEEK ALERT weekly stat rankings report, the STAT KINGS (teams that have won every game in the stats this season) include: BYU, Hawaii, Houston, LSU, Ohio State, Southern Cal, and West Virginia.

The STAT QUEENS (teams that have lost every game in the stats this season) include:  Florida International, Rice, and Utah State.

Other interesting ITS tidbits as we head into November… Auburn has held four of its last five opponents to season low yards… Boston College allowed 100 rushing yards for the first time this season last week against Virginia Tech… BYU has held each of its last four opponents to season low yards… Connecticut is 3-1 SU & 4-0 ATS as a dog this season despite being outgained in all four games…  Florida has been outgained in each of its last four games… Fresno State is 4-1 SU in its last five contests but was outgained in each game…  LSU’s win over Auburn marked the first time this season the Tigers failed to hold an opponent to a season low – or 2nd low – yardage mark… After starting the season 0-2, Michigan has held five of its last seven foes to season low – or 2nd low – yards…  Minnesota has allowed season high – or 2nd high – yardage in seven if its nine games this season… Navy has allowed season high yards in each of its last five games… After holding Nevada to a season low 185 yards in its season opener, Nebraska has been outstatted in every game since… New Mexico has held six of eight opponents to season low – or 2nd low – yardage marks this season… Northern Illinois has been outgained by 792 yards in its last two games… Ohio State has held seven opponents to season low yards this season… Oklahoma State has gained season high yards on four of its last five opponents… Oregon State has held four foes to season low yards this season…Southern Cal has held five of its last six opponents to season low yards… Toledo has rushed for 200 yards in each of its last five games… After starting the season 0-2 SU & ITS, Troy is 6-0 SU & ITS in its last six games… After a 1-3 SU & ITS start, Utah is 5-0 SU & 4-1 ITS in its last five games… Washington has allowed season high yards in each of its last three games… West Virginia has held six of its eight opponents to season low – or 2nd low – yards…

On the NFL front, the only two STAT KINGS (teams that have won every game in the stats this season) are the league’s two undefeated squads, Indianapolis and New England.

With Buffalo outgaining the Jets last week for the first time this season, San Francisco is the lone STAT QUEEN (teams that have lost every game in the stats this season) this year.

Interesting ITS NFL tidbits… Baltimore is 1-6 ATS this season despite going 5-2 ITS, with one of the stat losses by a mere one yard… Chicago has posted season low offensive yards on five occasions this year… Cincinnati has allowed season high – or 2nd high – yards in each of its last three games… Cleveland has surrendered season high – or 2nd high – yards in all but one game this season… New England has allowed season low – or 2nd low – yards in six of eight games this season… The NY Jets are 0-4 SU, ATS and ITS in their last four games… Not surprisingly, San Francisco has gained season low – or 2nd low – yards in five of its seven games this season… Tennessee has held five of its seven opponents to season low – or 2nd low – yards this season…
